If you’re an EXTREME couponer….I’m sure that you’re able to snag laundry detergent for cheap. BUT…if you’re like the rest of us, and don’t have the time to clip a bazillion coupons or coordinate with store sales and kid schedules…what do you do??   YOU make your OWN laundry detergent!  Yes…YOU can do it.  (my sister does it and FINALLY talked me into trying it.)

First…make a short shopping list and head over to Wal-mart (or your store of choice).

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Baking Soda
  • Borax
  • Super Washing Soda
  • Fels-Naptha soap (or any bar of soap you like ie.  Ivory)
The exact recipe that we’re making today is:
1 cup of shredded soap (Fels-Naptha)
2 cups of Borax
1 cup of Washing Soda
1 cup of Baking Soda
First….Start grating your soap (you’ll need about 1 cup for this recipe)
Next, grab a mixing bowl and pour in the grated soap.
  • Add 2 cups of Borax
  • Add 1 cup of Washing Soda
  • Add 1 cup of Baking Soda
  • Stir and Stir.  This is what your mixture will look like…
When you’re using this laundry detergent, all you need is 2 Tbs  (or one shot glass).
After making this batch, I actually scooped it all out so that you’d know how many loads you get.  Well, this will wash about 30 loads for you. (and it will fit nicely in a small container with a lid.  Be creative and reuse yogurt containers and things like that).
NOW…if you have a BIG family, here’s my sister’s recipe for enough soap to do 2 loads a day for 6-8 months (yes, she does that many loads).  You buy the same products above, you’re just using the WHOLE boxes:
  • 12 cups of Borax (4 lb box)
  • 8 cups of WAshing Soda (55 oz box)
  • 8 cups of Baking Soda (4 lb box)
  • 8 cups of Fels-Naptha (4 bars of soap)
Grate the soap, and mix it all together.  Store it in a BIG container and use 2 Tbs (or one shot glass) per load.
